BOYS BASKETBALL

Player of the Year: Rejean Ellis, Mission Bay

The agile junior guard led the Bucs to the Open Division championship, scoring 34 in a semifinal win over Torrey Pines and 16 in a 52-42 title-game win over Foothills Christian. For the season, Ellis averaged 24 points, six rebounds and six assists.

Player of the Year: Shyla Latone, Bonita Vista

Latone capped a remarkable career with a sensational senior season, averaging 37.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 4.6 steals a game with 89 3-pointers in leading the Barons to a section Division I championship. She scored a section record 76 points in a win over Hilltop.

BOYS SOCCER

Player of the Year: Pedro Mercado, San Marcos

Playing on sprained ankles in the playoffs, the senior scored a pair of goals in a semifinal win over Cathedral Catholic and followed with two more goals in a 4-2 Open Division championship win over La Costa Canyon as the Knights went 20-1-4. Mercado finished the season with 17 goals and 10 assists, giving him 37 goals and 12 assists in 65 career matches.

Player of the Year: Gloriana Hinojosa, Eastlake

Hinojosa was outstanding in the Open Division championship game, making four saves in regulation and overtime, one a spectacular diving stop, then turning back two penalty kicks as the Titans beat Steele Canyon. For the season, Hinojosa had 123 saves and allowed just 12 scores for an 0.9 goals-against average. She had nine shutouts on the season.

Wrestler of the Year: Destiny Lyng, Helix

A 139-pounder, the senior powered to the state final with four pins and a 16-0 technical fall before losing 9-4 in the title match to finish second in the state. Lyng, who was 22-3 on the season, was third in the state at 133 last year and won three San Diego Section championships in her career.

Headed to Princeton, Larkin finished her senior season with 118 goals, 37 assists and 89 steals for a team that finished 25-6, losing 4-2 to Carlsbad in the Open Division title match. Larkin scored five goals in a quarterfinal win and three in the semis. In her two-year varsity career, Larkin had 227 goals, 71 assists and 142 steals.
