The 2024 College World Series officially started on Friday with a pair of matchups taking place in Omaha, Nebraska.

North Carolina kicked things off with an incredible 3-2 walk-off victory over Virginia, before Tennessee secured another improbable walk-off win against Florida State by erasing a three-run deficit in the ninth inning.

With Friday's action concluded, here's a look at the updated first-round picture as well as a recap of each game.

Bracket 1

North Carolina def. Virginia, 3-2

Tennessee def. Florida State, 12-11

NC State vs. Kentucky, Saturday at 2 p.m. ET

Texas A&M vs. Florida, Saturday at 7 p.m. ET

North Carolina 3, Virginia 2

Prior to an incredible finish, Friday's matchup between the Tar Heels and the Cavaliers started off as a pitching duel.

Virginia's Evan Blanco threw 6.2 innings of two-run ball, striking out six batters compared to just two walks. Right-hander Jason DeCaro also had a productive day on the mound for North Carolina, allowing one run and racking up six strikeouts in four innings.

The Tar Heels struck first, as a groundout from outfielder Anthony Donofrio allowed redshirt sophom*ore Casey Cook to cross the plate from third base and take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

North Carolina wasn't able to run up the score, as the team didn't record another run until the seventh inning. In the meantime, Virginia jumped out to a 2-1 advantage after scoring in both the third and sixth innings.

Freshman Henry Ford recorded an impressive RBI single in the third before a sacrifice fly from infielder Griff O'Ferrall gave the Cavaliers their first lead of the day in the top of the sixth.

After scoring the first run of the game, Cook drove in North Carolina's second run with his own RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs and a runner on second base, the outfielder sent a ball to left field that tied the contest at 2-2.

After a scoreless eighth inning, Tar Heels junior Vance Honeycutt delivered the play of the game by hitting a line drive to left field with two outs that allowed North Carolina to secure a walk-off win.

The Tar Heels' bullpen deserves a fair share of credit for the victory, as pitchers Matt Poston and Dalton Pence combined to allow just one run while racking up three strikeouts in five innings of work.

Tennessee 12, Florida State 11

While the first game of the day may have started off slow, that wasn't the case for Friday night's clash between the Volunteers and the Seminoles.

Tennessee led 2-1 after thefirst inning due to a pair of RBI singles from first baseman Blake Burke and outfielderDylan Dreiling.

The Volunteers extended their lead to 4-1 through two innings, although Florida State didn't take long to respond. The Seminoles scored six runsat the top of the third and added two more in the fourth inning, jumping out toa commanding 9-4 edge.

Florida State's hot stretch was punctuated by doubles from Jaime Ferrer and Cam Smith in the third, with Ferrer coming back to the plate and recording a two-run home run in the fourth.

Next, it was the Volunteers' turn to hit some homers of their own. Outfielder Kavares Tears picked up a two-run blast in the sixth frame before Christian Moore hit a solo shot in the following inning. Moore went 5-6 at the plate, completing the sixth cycle in program history by the end of the sixth inning.

However, the outcome seemedbleak for the Volunteers as Florida State pushed the lead to 11-8 entering thebottom of the ninth.

Tennessee responded onceagain with a sacrifice fly by freshman Dean Curley before Burke tied the gamewith a two-run single. The Volunteers finally completedthe improbable comeback win after Dreiling recorded a walk-off single with two outs.
