Mr. conducted the auto electrical Orfant, had, appliance store here for six years. He previously was associated for 15 years with the Firestone Corp. of Boston. A veteran of World War 11, he served as a sergeant in the Marine Corps.

Maurice Phelan, Cambridge Latin Teacher, Dies Maurice E. Phelan, 72, of 20 Sevelle Cambridge, teacher at Cambridge High Latin School for more than years, and, died in Cambridge yesterday. A native of Cambridge, he was a graduate of Cambridge Latin School and Harvard College in the Class of 1911. He worked for the State Street Trust Co. from 1911 until 1917 when he enlisted in the Navy, from which he was discharged as a lieutenant following World War He began teaching immediately after the war and was known to generations of Cambridge high school students.

violinist, he was a member of the Harvard University Alumni Orchestra of Boston. He was also a horticulturist by hobby and planted thousands of trees in the Milford, N.H. area. He was a member of the Hillsboro, N.H., County Farm Bureau, the Souhegan Valley Fruit Producers Association, American Legion Post 27 of Cambridge, Bank Officers Association of Boston and the Harvard Pierian Society. Dodge Of Texaco Co. Dies in New York NEW YORK, July 29 -Harris T. Dodge, 62, senior vice president in charge of world-wide sales for Texaco, and former Boston resident, died at his home here today. A native of Temple, Texas, Doage. joined the Texaco assistant company in 1920 and was manager of the company's Boston sales division from 1926 until 1934.

He was later manager of Texaco sales in Belgium, The Netherlands, and the Philippines, and served the company in other capacities before several, appointed senior vice president in 1959. He leaves a wife, Ruth Dodge; two daughters, Mrs. Jack D. Emery of Casper, and Mrs. B.

R. Hutcheson of Boston, and two brothers, H. W. Dodge of Bronxville, N.Y., and Kemp Dodge of New Orleans. Services will be held at the Campbell Funeral Church here, Monday at 2:30 p.m.

Burial will be in Houston, Texas, on Aug. 3. Thomas A. Leonard Dies in Melrose Thomas A. Leonard of 23 Summer Melrose, veteran of both world wars, died at his home last night.

A native of Wakefield, he served in France as a 2nd Lt. in the 101ht Field Artillery in World War I. In World War II he was captain in the 708th Military Police Battalion. He leaves a wife, Helen (Preston) Leonard; a son, John J. of Melrose; a sister, Mrs.

Emily L. Harrington of Wakefield, and two brothers, Charles of New York City and Edward of Florida. A solemn requiem Mass will be held in St. Mary's Church, Melrose, Monday, at 9 a.m. Burial in Forest Glade Cemetery, Wakefield.

Funeral Today In Newton of Dr. Thos. F. Dowd A solemn requiem Mass for Dr. Thomas F.

Dowd, 67, Newton dentist, will be held in Sacred Heart Church, Newton Centre, today at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Cambridge Cemetery. Dr. Dowd, who maintained his office at his home at 866 Beacon practiced in Newton Centre for 43 years. He died Thursday in Chelmsford, where he moved only three weeks ago.

E. Roads; of 2-Day Toll Rises to 15 Eight persons lost their lives on New England roads yesterday, raising the six-state highway death toll to 15 since Thursday. State and local police throughout the region reported scores of minor automobile accidents yesterday as thousands of beachgoers jammed roadways to escape the extremely, high humidity and near 80-degree temperatures. Five of yesterday's deaths occurred in Massachusetts, while Maine, Connecticut and Vermont each recorded one. Seven other persons lost their automobile accidents Thursday." The five new deaths pushed the Massachusetts toll for the year to 299 compared with 289 a year ago.

Vermont's fatality boosted the year's highway toll to 47. A 2-year-old South Boston boy was killed yesterday when he was struck by an automobile as he crossed the street near his home. Michael Kuzhick of 26 Pilsudsky way died at City Hospital one hour after the accident. Police said the driver of the car was Bartholomew E. Carr of 31 Grassmere Hyde Park.

In Maynard two young men were killed when their car went, out of control and smashed into a tree on Rte. 27 near the Sudbury line. Thomas Loynd, 23 of 206 Concord Holliston, the driver, and Peter H. McNeil 22, of 204 Central Framingham, were pronounced dead on arrival at Emerson Hospital, Concord. At Whitefield, an automobile hurtled off Rte.

218 and overturned in fog early yesterday, killing one passenger and critically injuring another. Walter I F. Snipe, 24, of Bath, was killed in the crash. He was the state's 20th highway victim this month and 80th this year. Alexander Murray, 25, also of Bath, a passenger, was hospitalized Gardiner with head injuries and fractured ribs.

His name was placed on the danger list. Police said the driver, Leonard Renney, 25, of Bath lost control of the car on a curve two miles south of King's Mill. He escaped serious injury. John A. Williams, 46, of West Haven, was dragged to his death yesterday after he was struck by a car that failed to stop.

Williams' badly mangled on Rte. 22A passing found his home pear, truck driver. His death was Vermont's fifth highway fatality in two days. In Hatchville, Joseph D. Cabral, 35, of Falmouth, was killed yesterday when he was hit by a tank truck as he worked with a Falmouth highway department crew on Rte.

151. Cabral was the father of three. In New Canaan, Mrs. Ella Gilson of 522 Plimpton Bronx, N.Y., was instantly killed at 8 p.m. yesterday in a head-on collision on Rte.

123. Three Hospitalized Her husband, Jerome 57, driver of the car, was admitted to Norwalk Hospital. Also admitted were James Green, 32, of 47 Lowe South Norwalk, driver of the second car, and his passenger, Waldson Lee, 31, of 186 Norwalk. None of the three was reported in critical condition. Carter, 41, of Newport, R.I., was killed yesterday in a rear-end collision on the Fall River Expressway in Berkley. Carter, father of two, was attached to the destroyer USS Hawkins. At Bethel, a fireman narrowly escaped death when his fire truck was demolished in a grade-crossing collision with a passenger train. The fireman, Stanley Gallant, escaped with a cut lip. Clyde K. M. Kluckhohn Dies World Famed Anthropologist Dr. Clyde K. M.

Kluckholn, 55, of 50 Fresh Pond Cambridge, professor of anthropology at Harvard and curator of southwestern American ethnology in Harvard's Peabody Museum, died yesterday in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Dr. Kluckholn organized the Russian Research Center at Harvard in 1947 and served as its director until 1954. After World War II he worked with Gen. MacArthur in Japan as an adviser on social relations in connection with the occupation.

Earlier he worked in Washington for two war years as co ment's co-chief and of the the War Office of Depart- War Information's joint Japan morale survey. Dr. Kluckhohn had done work in all fields of anthropology and was considered one of the leading social anthropologists in the world. His studies also covered linguistics, archaeology, physical anthropology and ethnol- ogy. Navajo Indian Work Prof.

Kluckhohn's early work was in field anthropology and ethnology the American Southwest, particularly among the Navajo Indians of New Mexico. 1956, with Raymond Bauer and Alex Inkles, he lished "How the Soviet System Works," a book based on the results of hundreds of interviews with Soviet emigres to Europe and the United States. His major writings were the field of anthropology. His books include "To the Foot of the Rainbow," "Beyond the Rainbow," "Mirror For Man," and, with Leonard MacCombe and E. Z.

Vogt, "Navajo Means People." He published two books with D. C. Leighton, "The Navajo" and "Children of the People." One of his articles, "If Columbus Had Not Discovered America," appeared on the editorial pages of the Globe 1958. Prof. Kluckhohn served a consultant and adviser many government agencies during his career.

Since 1942 he had been consultant to the Indian Service of the Department of the Interior and served on that department's committee on Indian Affairs from 1949-51. He was a consultant to the research and development of the Department of Defence from 1948, to 1954 and since 1956 was a member of the advisory committee of the State Department's Foreign Service Institute. DIGNAN Continued From the First Page He was the second high ranking Edison Company official to die within a month. President Thomas H.

Carens, 67, of Wellesley Hills died June 29. Mr. Dignan was a leader in the electric utility industry since 1928 when he was employed by the New England Power Association as assistant general counsel. He joined the Boston Edison Company in 1951 as executive vice president and in the same year was elected president and general manager. Born in Wakefield, he was outstanding athlete at Wakefield High School.

Baseball and track were his major sports. He won shotput championship at the B.A.A. school games in 1917 and while representing Holy Cross earned the 300-yard title in the N.E. A.A.U. 1919 championships.

In 1921 he was New England intercollegiate shotput champion. He was graduated from Holy Cross in 1921 and received his law degree at Boston University in 1924. He practiced law in 1925 and 1926 with the James M. Hoy law firm before practicing privately until 1928. Shortly after joining the New England Power Association, he was promoted to secretary of the company, and in 1930 was named manager of the Lowell Electric Light Company.

During a period of 21 years Mr. Dignan served as president of the Worcester County Electric Company, New England Power Service Company, Malden Electric Company and Narragansett Electric Company. He was married in 1927 to Hester Sharkey of Cambridge, and they had five daughters and a son. His wife was a teacher in Wakefield High School. He was a director of the Boston Edison Company, the First National Bank of Boston, Associated Industries of Massachusetts, Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, United Fund of Greater Boston, Electric Council of New England, World Trade Center, New England Council, Edison Electric Institute and Yankee Atomic Electric Co.

Trustee of B.U. and H.C. He was a trustee of Boston University, Civic Education Foundation Suffolk Franklin Savings Bank and Holy Cross College. His wide variety of civic associations included service on the Greater Boston Economic Study Committee, a member of the corporation of the New England Deaconess Hospital and Northeastern versity, and executive committee member of the Massachusetts Committee of Catholics, Protestants and Jews and the Boston Arts Festival. From 1924 to 1925 he was civic secretary of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, later serving as vice president and director.

He also served two terms as selectman in Wakefield. Among the club memberships of Mr. Dignan were the Algonquin Club, Beacon Society, Clover Club, Commercial Club and Downtown and Engineers Club. Besides his wife, he leaves five daughters, Mrs. George B.

Cottle of Wenham; Mrs. Michael Curtis of Jamaica Plain: Dr. Ellen F. Dignan of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Mrs. John B.

McGinty of Chestnut Hill and Marion W. Dignan of Swampscott; a son, Thomas G. Dignan of Swampscott; two sisters, Mrs. William D. Whitney of Melrose and Mrs.

In 1950 he was recipient of the Viking Medal for general anthropology.
