Updates: Spring ISD announces campus closures for Wednesday (2024)

HOUSTON — Another powerful line of storms pushed through the Houston area on Tuesday, knocking out power to more than a quarter million CenterPoint customers. The storm came with powerful winds, hail and blinding wind.

HISD ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL SCHOOL CLOSURES

Houston ISD updated their list of school closures for Wednesday morning.

SPRING ISD CLOSES SOME CAMPUSES

Spring ISD said out of an abundance of caution, they are closing both Carl Wunsche Sr. High School and Winship Elementary School on Wednesday, May 29. No classes will be held due to power outages at both campuses.

HISD CLOSES CAMPUS

On Tuesday night, Houston ISD announced that Frank Black Middle School would be closed Wednesday due to power outages from the storms.

"At this time, the campus does not have power and the cooling systems are not yet fully operational," a note to parents read.

It's unclear when the campus is expected to get power back.

PEOPLE SHOCKED BY LIGHTNING STRIKES, DOWNED POWER LINES

Montgomery County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management confirmed that in The Woodlands, a 35-year-old man was shocked by a lightning strike. In the Willis area, two adults and a minor were shocked by a downed power line.

The status of these victims is unknown.

COOL DOWN CENTERS OPEN

The City of Houston announced that multiple cool down centers were open Tuesday.

Anyone who needed a ride could call 311 to get one for free.

STORM DAMAGE FROM TUESDAY INCLUDED IN FEMA DISASTER

In a news conference, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo addressed the storm recovery, saying that if you had damage from Tuesday's storm, you can qualify for FEMA aid. It's covered under the same event as the derecho storm earlier this month.

HISD BOND MEETING POSTPONED

HISD's bond meeting that was scheduled for Tuesday night has been postponed until Monday, June 10.

VOTE CENTER CLOSED DUE TO STORM DAMAGE

Heads up to those of you who were voting today. Because of storm damage, a voting location at 5202 Griggs is closed.

HOMES UNDER CONSTRUCTION COLLAPSE

The Magnolia Fire Department has responded to homes under construction that collapsed. They confirmed just after 4:30 p.m. that someone who was trapped died.

HISD CANCELS AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

Because of severe weather, Houston ISD is canceling after-school activities.

POWER ISSUES AT VOTING CENTERS

At of 1 p.m., Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth was reporting that at least a dozen vote centers lost power.

Spring Branch ISD cancels shelter-in-place

UPDATE: Spring Branch ISD is on normal dismissal now (as of 2:15 p.m.)

At 1:52 p.m., a shelter-in-place was issued at Spring Branch ISD. All dismissals and buses were held until an all-clear was given. A decision about after-school programming will be made soon.
